And I had made poetry free to all when I mastered it,

as the waters of the Two Rivers are free to a drinker.

Then, when it coursed like the winds and covered

the reaches of far-flung lands with its rhymes,

and spread as widely as the sun in the brilliance of midmorning,

its radiance lighting the humps of riding camels,

I considered a ban after so long granting free access,

because of unworthy sharing, not poor rewards.

Then, when the Darimite sun of high glory appeared,

bringing pride to its two chiefs, Laqit and Hajib,

I spoke loudly in the assembly, and cared nothing for

the resemblance of discarded pebbles to the stars.

So I fashioned necklaces in praise of Taj al-Muluk,

that adorn the nights before adorning bosoms.

My affection for him is longstanding, not newly born,

and my praise of his greatness, in describing him, is not false.

A youth like a keen-edged sword, a delight to the beholder,

and death to enemies, and comfort to a companion.

Whenever the crisis turns pitch-black, he dispels its darkness

with calm counsel, keen along its striking edges.

He is distinguished; arrogance flees before his gentle kindness,

and he grows more compassionate as his rank rises.

And gleaming swords and spears are shattered by his judgments,

and the purport of his letters sweeps battalions away.

Nor does he seek from his days the prestige of wealth,

when his hopes attain noble virtues.

And in obedience to the Imam, he never strayed from sincere loyalty,

even if it made him tread upon the thorns of scorpions.

So may a state ever remain a planting of the Caliphate,

with glory casting its shade upon it from every side.
