    A Rabiʿite of Banu Jusham—

every household of his is Khaffān, a lions’ haunt.

The desert trembles if they ride,

    so the plain seems drunk.

    فَوَفيُّ القوم خَوَّانُ

    They broke faith unjustly, without cause;

so even their faithful man is a habitual traitor.

So we attacked them at dawn, though they were forewarned,

    and dawn’s herald was swift.

    Their horses grazed on spears,

as though the brown spears were buttercups.

    And our valor humbled them,

    so the proud king submitted.

    our forefather—our pride—is ʿAdnān.

Our fire is on the mountaintops; by it

travelers and riders find their way.

Each feeds others lavishly, despite hunger,

and on the day of terror is a fierce spearman.

And above the assembly shine for us

    radiant faces and crowns.

    زانَهم حُسْنٌ وإِحْسانُ

    My people are no dull, ineffectual folk;

    beauty and beneficence adorn them.

    Orators who never lack

clarity in the delivery of speech.

    And kings, to whom kings

are slaves in carrying out commands.

    The sea envies their hands,

while the night breeze is bitterly cold.

Like Raḍī al-Dīn, who is envied

for his abundant bounty by pouring rain.

He gives away the world with an apology,

whereas the giver of a pittance vaunts his favors.

    Asleep to every shameful deed,

yet wide awake to lofty glory.

A drought’s saving rain when joyful,

a lion in war when angry.

Generosity whose pure essence has never been marred

by putting off those in need.
