A base person's favor is ropes around necks,

Tightly twisted, like the strangler's ropes.

Except that strangling kills, whereas this

Is lasting pain, enduring as long as time.

So if hope in the base person fails,

Then how noble a failure that is!

Poison's fury, with one's dignity intact, is preferable

To a cure through an antidote with abasement.
