صدقْتَ الصَّبرُ أجملُ يا فلانُ

فهَلْ لي من لواحظِه أَمانُ

You speak true, patience is most fair, my friend

Can I find shelter from its piercing ken?

نَصحتَ ولم تَزل خِلاًّ شفيقاً

فمنْ لي لَوْ وَعَتْ مِنّي الأذان

You counselled well, and stayed a loyal mate,

But who will hear, if I choose not to heed?

عرفتك بالوفاءِ فكُنْ مُعيني

على وجدي فمثلي مَنْ يُعانُ

I know your faith, so stand now by my side,

In this travail, who else will be my guide?

وفي كِلَلِ الأحبّةِ والحنايا

فؤادٌ بانَ عنّي يَوم بانوا

With friends now gone, and all the past's delights,

A heart alone, since all companions fled.

تملّكَهُ كَحيلُ الطرفِ أَلْمى

عَنتْ لجمالِه الغيدُ الحسانُ

That beauty captured me, like kohl on eyes,

Its charms eclipsing all the maidens' smiles.

يُقاتِلُ باللحاظِ ولا سهامٌ

ويَطْعنُ بالقوام ولا سنانُ

No arrows nor spears, just a glance that slays,

No swords, just grace, my wits it defiles.

لِساحر طرفِه غَزَلٌ وفتكٌ

بنا وكذا يكون الافتنانُ

Ensorcelled am I by those eyes so bright,

Our hearts snared fast in that sweet web of light.
