مَلكْتُمُواyou have gained dominion فَاعْدلُواso be just فيtoward الصَبِّthe lovesick lover أَوْor جُورواbe unjust
ذنبُthe offense الأحبّةِof beloveds فيagainst العُشّاقِlovers مغفورًforgiven
You have dominion: deal justly with the lovesick lover, or wrong him.
You have ruled, so be just in passion or unjust
The offenses of beloveds against their lovers are forgiven.
The sins of loved ones are forgiven in lovers
وقدand indeed تقرّرَbecame established فيin قلبيmy heart مَقرُّكُمyour dwelling
دونَto the exclusion of الورىhumankind فأقيمواso dwell فيهin it أوor سيرواdepart
And your dwelling has become firmly established in my heart,
And your abode in my heart has been decided
To the exclusion of all others; so dwell there, or depart.
Beyond the world, so stay in it or move on
ياO مُخْربيdestroyers of رَبْعthe abode صَبريof my patience بالجفاthrough coldness عَبثَاًin vain
الحمدُpraise للهto God رَبْعُthe abode الودّof affection مَعْمورُinhabited
O you who vainly ruin the abode of my patience through coldness,
O you who have destroyed a quarter of my patience in vain
Praise be to God: affection's abode remains inhabited.
Praise be to God, a quarter of affection remains intact
وياand O مطوّلَyou who prolong هجرانيabandonment of me بلاwithout سَببٍa cause
أماhas not? بداbecome apparent لكَto you فيin التَّطْويلِthe prolongation تقصيرُa shortcoming
And O you who prolong your abandonment of me without cause,
O you who have prolonged estrangement without cause
Has no shortcoming in this prolongation become apparent to you?
Does it not seem to you shortened in prolonging?
ومُنكراًand you who deny ماwhat أُلاقيI suffer فيin مَحبّتِهlove for him
حُبّيmy love كطَرفِكَlike your gaze بينamong النّاسِpeople مَشْهورُwell known
And you who deny what I suffer in loving him,
And denying what I face in his love
My love, like your gaze, is well known among people.
My love for you among people is well known
أَنّاI الكثيبُthe sand dune المعنَّىtormented فيin هواكlove for you وإنْand even if
أظهرتُI have shown أنيthat I am بماwith what ألقاهُI endure it مَسْرورُhappy
I am the sand dune, tormented by love for you, even if
I am truthful in my passion for you, even if
I have shown that I am happy with what I endure.
Outwardly I pretend to be happy with what has transpired
ألاَis there no خلاصٌrelease لِقَلْبِيfor my heart مِنfrom صَبابتِهِits ardent longing
فإِنَّهfor indeed it فيin تعاطيpursuing الحُبِّlove مَغْروراًdeluded
Is there no release for my heart from its passionate longing?
Alas, my heart cannot be saved from its youthful folly
For it is deluded in its pursuit of love.
For it is vain in the pursuit of love
كمhow much ذاthis أُكابدُI endure ماwhat لَوْif مَرَّpassed أَيْسَرُهُits lightest part

How much I endure! If even the least of it passed
How much I suffer, which if its least
Over Mount al-Tur, Mount al-Tur would be crushed beneath its weight.
Had befallen Tur, Tur would have collapsed under its weight
وكمand how often أرَىI am seen طاوياًfolding كَشْحيmy flank عَلىover شجَنٍsorrow
ونارُand a fire شوقٍof longing لَهاfor it فيin القَلبِthe heart تَسعيرُkindling
And how often I am seen folding my flank over sorrow,
And how much I see my patience folded over agony
While a fire of longing is kindled within the heart.
While the fire of longing rages within my heart
وكمand how often أراقبI watch for ساريnight-wandering الطَّيفِthe phantom يطرقنيvisits me by night
وإِنّماyet only الطّيفُthe phantom تَخْييلٌillusion وتَزْويرُand deception
And how often I watch for the night-wandering phantom to visit me,
And how much I watch the phantom of his apparition visiting me
Yet the phantom is only illusion and deception.
When in fact it is but imaginary and false
ياO لَلْحِمىfor the sanctuary كمhow much علىupon واديةِits valley طلّwent unavenged دمٌblood

وكمand how many فُؤادa heart محبٍّof a lover ثَمَّthere مأْسورُheld captive
Alas for the sanctuary! How much blood in its valley has gone unavenged!
Oh my fever! How much blood is shed in the valley of yearning
And how many a lover's heart is held captive there!
And how many a lover's heart is then imprisoned
وبيand I am smitten with مَليكa king جمالٍof beauty سيفُthe sword مُقلتِهِof his eye

And I am smitten with a king of beauty; the sword of his eye
And I have a king of beauty whose sharp sword
Is triumphant over people's hearts, victorious.
Is victorious over people's hearts, triumphant

A prophet of beauty, who has from the garden of his cheek
A prophet of beauty, for him from his meadows and gardens
Gardens of Eden, and from his glances, houris.
Are paradises of Eden, and from his glances, maidens
