You have attained all you wished of my sorrow and anguish.

Yet all my life I have found no end to your estrangement.

Why did you not tell my heart, before its ordeal,

that death lies in ambush for lovers?

My soul took up love, not knowing

    that love spares no one.

I complain to God of the infatuation I endure,

and the anguish whose flames have burned my liver.

O people of Babylon, have mercy; temper your rejection.

I have no endurance for separation and abandonment.

I have indeed given you my soul without a price,

and traded my sleep for sleeplessness, hand to hand.

And oh, the sanctuary—may no night-rain cloud miss it—

of a gazelle whose glances slay the lion!

The knot of my endurance in loving him comes undone

through the magic of his eye, which blows spells upon knots.

He never nocked arrows from the lashes of his eye

    without sundering soul from body.

Nor did his well-proportioned figure sway

without exposing the crookedness of the bān tree.

How can I live on, when my noble patience for you has perished?

Do you not see my body in a shroud of sickness?

What life has a sorrowful man, whose heart in grief

has left a body rendered invisible by sickness?

O dweller in my heart, you have made tears flow as blood,

yet shown no compassion to neighbor or companion.

And you who send the phantom for comfort and consolation,

that I might behold the sight of his beautiful face:

sleep has not knocked at my eyelid's door, for grief,

so it has not borne me to a phantom of you visiting by night.

What harm if you gave the yearning lover some of

the sleep you took away, which you yourself do not need?

To you I complain of my wasting away in grief for love of you,

and of the grief and sorrow I endure.

I have kept my hearing, my gaze, and my breast free from

love of any but you, from reproach, and from slumber.

And how could a dream-phantom reach me? Even if

it came to me, it would not see me, so extreme is my sickness.

O dwellings at al-Jarʿāʾ that once brought us together,

may the eyes of the pouring rain-cloud weep upon you!

And a day of union we spent at Kāẓimah,

as though it were a passing cloud in bygone days.

Days when the eye of one who envied me for you lay asleep,

heedless of me and you, while fortune's eye watched over me.

Days when you were deaf to the tale-bearers,

and were to me what the soul is to my body.

I did not know what love's law was; then, when

I came to know your enchanting eye, it taught me.

And since I knew you, I have left life behind in grief.

Ah, if only I had never known you!
