Who taught speech the magic of the languid eye,

And fashioned beneath her neck two caskets of ivory?

And who set the bān-tree shoot upright

Upon a quivering dune of buttocks,

And brought forth the full moon from her brow's radiance,

Shining in the gloom of her forelock's pitch-dark night?

God be praised—what slenderness that figure possesses,

And what beauty and delight that cheek possesses!

A sun that journeys through the hearts of those she has enchanted,

Among humankind, as through celestial spheres and zodiacal signs.

So do not ask how many she captured with longing, and how many she slew

On the day of parting—but ask who survived.
