نُعَاهِدُ مَنْ نحبّ فلا نُجابُ

نُعَاهِدُ مَنْ نحبّ فلا نُجابُ

ونَمتَدحُ الملوكَ فَلاَ نُثابُ

ونَمتَدحُ الملوكَ فَلاَ نُثابُ

We make pledges to those we love, yet receive no reply.

And we praise kings, yet receive no reward.

فبُعداً لِلْقريضِ إذا غدونا

فبُعداً لِلْقريضِ إذا غدونا

عَلَيْهِ لا نُجازُ ولا نُجابُ

عَلَيْهِ لا نُجازُ ولا نُجابُ

So away with poetry, if we have come to be

Neither rewarded for it nor answered.
