Trust Him who has placed, for you alone among mortals,

Giving and withholding in your two palms.

No knot did they tighten in their scheming

But you made certain its undoing.

How often has the dog, despite its ugliness, taunted

The full moon by barking, yet never bitten it!

Iblis made what they did seem fair to them,

So they deemed obedience to him obligatory.

They sought, under ignorance's sway, to deny

That bounty of yours which had covered the earth.

And they did not know that glory's debts

    Are exacted with your brown-shafted spears;

And that your swords, in their fury,

    Have eyelids that have never tasted sleep;

And that your judgments, if brought to bear

In a crisis, are like a sword, or sharper.

They fled in fear, and there was no slackening

In your horses' gallop at their heels.

They were in the darkness of bewilderment,

Where some of them cursed the others,

Until, through you, they discerned the path of guidance

And clearly understood the Sunnah and prescribed duty.

And now their greatest desire is

That you forgive their sin and be pleased.

So pardon them with forbearance, closing your eyes to their faults,

For pardon and indulgence are your wont.

And leave them as captives upon the earth, for indeed

You have gained dominion over its length and breadth.
