What an excellent deal! And what an excellent purchase!

Whatever I forget, I shall not forget the death
He who rose with his sword against a heretic band,
Of Abu al-Husayn, all my life, until I am buried.
Blocking the shining path.

Whose excellences cannot be bounded by any other's
About his grave, but have found no one to tell me.
And whose worth none can estimate or limit.

My father and I—indeed, all creation—be ransom for
He of whom the Prophetic narrations tell with good words
One who has no grave to be visited or seen.
Repeatedly, like those about his grandfather.

He who defied the accursed tyrant and led them
Saying about him as was said about his father,
To fight him—lean steeds with disheveled forelocks;
Meaning Ali, the best of those who walked the earth.

زيديّة يَقّفُو السَّبيلَ الأنورا
He who rose, drawing his sword, among a band
He is the elite of God whom the guidance accompanied
Of Zaydis, following the brightest path;
And his beloved, according to the text, among the best of mankind.

The crusher of formidable armies when they are called,
Whose rank cannot be approached, let alone measured;
The defeater of lofty mountains when they settle.

Repeatedly from his forefather, the best of humankind;
While he shines among the generous withoutdoubt.

He of whom he spoke as he spoke of his forefather—
By God, I swear that he is more majestic than any -
I mean Ali, the best who ever trod the earth—
Other than the Trustee - and more esteemed.

With a Prophetic magnanimity that has shamed
And His beloved, by the explicit word of the best of humankind;
Even the pouring clouds by his munificence.

While he is foremost among the noble, without dispute.
He has known neither lies in speech nor sin.

The lion of Shara in his thicket, preventing his roar.
Repentant, proclaiming God's Oneness and magnification.

He never knew falsehood in speech or fabrication.
And was granted abundant grace and favor.

The abode of eternity—how soon he praised the night journey!
And the blunt spears of Caleb's wood piercing the plains.

There, an unbeliever surpassed them
Without crookedness in it, or I died and was excused.
And split his shining forehead with an arrow.

They left the upright faith dust-covered through him.
When they witnessed a monstrous, shocking sight.

What a bargain in their religion—how ruinous!
Brackish, violent water, it would have turned sweet as Kawthar.

Had it known who was upon it, would have splintered.
Do they think anyone who scattered your ashes actually did so?

Goodness came to you from Taybah visiting as a pilgrim,
For Muhammad, and aversion to your being buried.
And from the dust, an imagined scent of fragrant musk.

Darkness would almost have hidden you, had it not become,
And in return for your advice when you stood for his order
Through your blessed forehead, a brightening dawn.
And traversed in the darkness like the shining moon.

A fragrance betrayed your honored burial-earth,
So rejoice in the pleasure of the Most Merciful,
Without which the enemy would neither have known nor discovered it.
For surely you are most deserving of acceptance and worthiest.

A scent that came visiting you by night from Taybah,
Congratulations! You have neighbored your grandfather Ahmad
And from al-Ghari, seeming like pungent musk.
And God granted you abundant recompense.
وذرواand they scattered رمادَكَyour ashes فيinto الفراتِthe Euphrates ضلالَةًin error
وذروا رمادَكَ في الفراتِ ضلالَةً
أتُرىdo you suppose? دَرَىknew ذاريthe scatterer of رمادكَyour ashes ماwhat ذَرىhe scattered
أتُرى دَرَى ذاري رمادكَ ما ذَرى
In their error they scattered your ashes into the Euphrates;
How trifling is this abode compared to the one
Do you suppose their scatterer knew what he scattered?
In which you live in bliss, with a choice!
هَيهاتfar from it بلrather جَهلواthey did not know لطِيبbecause of the sweetness of أَريجهِits fragrance

أرمادَwhether the ashes of جسمكَyour body ماwhat ذَروْاthey scattered أمor عَنْبَراambergris
أرمادَ جسمكَ ما ذَروْا أم عَنْبَرا
Far from it! Rather, its sweet scent kept them from knowing
If the world had any worth next to its adversities,
Whether they scattered your body's ashes or ambergris.
It would have made you have the greatest share.

ملْحٌ أُجاجٌ عادَ عَذباً كوثرا
The Euphrates rejoiced in its nearness; had it been
But you were, in God's great majesty,
Bitter brine, it would have become sweet—a Kawthar.
Too noble for Him to grant it to you.
وجزاءand as recompense for نُصحِكَyour sincere devotion حينَwhen قمتَyou rose بأمرِهat His command
وجزاء نُصحِكَ حينَ قمتَ بأمرِه
وسَرَيتَand traveled by night بدراًas a full moon فيin الظلامdarkness كماas سرىit traveled
وسَرَيتَ بدراً في الظلام كما سرى
As recompense for your devotion when you rose at His command
I wonder, will I be your neighbor
And traveled through darkness like the full moon as it travels,
Or will sins drive me back to the wilderness?

The Lord of heaven—how worthy and deserving you are!
Love for you obligates never to be lost?

May it gladden you: you now dwell beside your forefather Ahmad,
Say that the young man is present with us for the meeting, though
And God has granted you the fullest reward.
Times have cast him far from us and delayed him.
أهوِنْhow insignificant بهَذيis this الدَّارِabode فيin جنْبِcomparison with التيthe one which

How trivial this abode beside the one
O best of those whose rising made guidance appear
Where you now choose among delights!
On earth, and misguidance was routed and recoiled!

قَدْرٌ لَخْوّلكَ النّصيبَ الأكثرا
If this world had, in the eyes of its Creator,
Excuse me if my praises of you were inadequate,
Any worth, He would have bestowed its greatest share on you.
For my master, I deserve, most certainly, to be excused.

مِن أن يُنيلكَها أجلّ وأخطرا
Rather, you were, in God's eyes—exalted be His majesty—
I did not manage in my eulogy of you to articulate
Too noble and eminent for Him to bestow it upon you.
Except stutters of inability and trickles of words.

Would that I knew: shall I dwell beside
Do you reckon me up to your level of majesty
You, or will my sins drive me back?
In rhetoric? God is greatest! So tremendously great!

Shall I be driven away from you tomorrow, though I am one
What has the infallible attained that you have not,
Who holds through love for you a pledge that will never be broken?
When you have always been far above any flaw?

Say: 'This youth shared the encounter with us, though
May God send blessings upon you after Muhammad
Time held him back from us and delayed him.'
As long as your mention excels or is cherished.

O best of those whose rising made guidance manifest
And upon his Household, as long as the youth of meadows
On earth, while error was routed and driven back,
Live the mirage, and the scent of your remembrance perfumes the pulpit.

Never did I set the steed of expression running in your praise
But it stumbled from its weakness and fell headlong.

God is greatest—how majestic and great you are!

Since you have always been purified of all that stains?

At dawn, and your remembrance's fragrance perfumes a pulpit.
