The ear of generosity is deaf to poetry's call.

So reciting and composing bring you no benefit.

O speakers of poetry, gently now—may you have no father!

Take your time: praise's fire-stick yields no flame.

We are indeed in an age in which the eloquent man wishes

he were inarticulate in speech, a stammerer.

How often you praise and are given no reward,

as though your praise were an inducement to withhold.

If your sustenance lay in clay or in water

one day, even clay and water would fail you.

And, O you whose bounty is hoped for, you are in an age

in which noble deeds and eminence are mere names.

Beware, beware of pleading prior merit,

for that, if you examine it closely, is the malady.

Nor say, if you seek success, 'They have been slain

before you—grandfathers and fathers of mine.'

for his lot is only expulsion and exclusion.

And whoever is righteous in his creed,

his lot is only expulsion and exclusion.

If you seek a gift, they say, 'A burden in begging'; and if

you reproach them, they say, 'Foul of speech, a lampooner.'

I ask God's forgiveness: satire is not among my traits,

but I am a man who refuses oppression.

A king is only an outcast, his saddle neglected,

unless the reins of generosity are loosened.

Where are those kings, whose hopeful petitioner never came

without being met by cheerfulness and gifts?

Until, through quenched thirst and fullness, they grant forgetfulness

to people whose livers burn with hunger.

Tell the poor, the people of poetry: 'Oh, the toil

of thought, if no wealth from it reaches them!'

These kings, the kings of the age—is there anyone

among them who walks the path of goodness?

How often we have praised, yet our praises have availed nothing,

because they give only to whom they please.

O Ahm, hear the plea of a captive whose helpers are few,

and whose loved ones betrayed him because of time's harshness.

Hear the complaint of one raising his voice, proclaiming grief,

if proclamation and raising the voice can help.

What ails the rhymes, then, that their haunts have grown deserted?

In your time, does destitution weaken poetry?

What ails the rhymes, then, that their haunts have grown deserted?

And in your time, does exaltation weaken poetry?

What ails the rhymes, then, that their haunts have grown deserted?

In your time, does destitution weaken poetry?

Who is the one who will lift them from the station of humiliation,

if they suffer trampling beneath humiliation's sandals?

    ضاقتْ بِصَاحبِها للأرض أرجاءُ

    Fie on it—a condition whose wearer is wretched;

the earth's expanses have closed in on its bearer.

And a craft whose wares have been peddled among us—

so its seller's profit is poverty and fruitless toil.

Enough now! Rescue a suppliant; you are ever his

hope, if hardship and adversity touch him.
