Shall I heed the reproacher and forget?

No, by Him who led him astray and guided me.

O you who reproach my love, leave me, for I

Am content in it with my abasement and humiliation.

And my soul be ransom for him: I have made my sleep

For his sake, an endowment for his drowsy eye.

No wonder my tear duct has overflowed with tears

For love of him; so leave me to my own affairs.

The farther I grow, in loving him, from forgetting.

Cruel glances, and the cruelty of my times.

Whenever I say, 'It will incline to peace,'

Its turn of fortune brings a renewed war.

How often I seek to win exalted glory,

While time's reversals pull back my reins.

And I hope to build a house of glory,

While it is bent on demolishing what I build.

How can I endure humiliation, when

The two Farqad stars lie beneath my aim and ambition?

Die nobly, for death better befits the free

Than a life of abasement and humiliation.

Abandon greed—woe to you!—and seek sufficiency

In God Most High, needing none, far or near.

Of honor, along with the fulfillment of hopes.

For I see that bright swords do not cut until

One day they draw far from their sheaths.

And many an envier seeks to attain my station

Among the exalted—but how far, how far beyond him is my station!

He sees me only with his narrow eye—

And who can ensure for me that he never sees me?

What shame is there for suns if ever

They are hidden from the eyes of the blind?
