Over the nearest of people and the farthest.
The near and the distant alike.

And sufficient proof of his excellence is that
And it suffices you of his merit that he,
He never prostrated himself before any but the Guardian.
Did not prostrate to other than the All-Dominant.

And that he whose brother is the Chosen One
And that the one whom the Chosen One protected,
Indeed holds the imamate from Ahmad.
For the Imamate was from Ahmad.

He bestowed on him the imamate after himself,
He granted him the Imamate after him,
And both were among the people at a public gathering.
And they were before all people in their gathering.

And who but he is seen standing
And who other than him is seen standing,
At the Pool, giving mankind drink by hand?
At the Basin, giving drink to all from his hand.

And love for whom has become, among mankind,
And whose love in the world,
A sign of noble birth?
Became evidence of the nobility of birth.

And the Messenger's very self, by the Scripture's explicit words—
The soul of the Messenger by the text of the Book,
And one's own self is not like the more distant companion.
And the soul is not like the most distant companion.
ومَنand who نامَslept فيin مَرْقَدِthe bed of المصْطَفىthe Chosen One

And who slept in the Chosen One's bed,
And whoever slept in the tomb of Mustafa,
While the eyes of the treacherous stayed awake?
While the eyes of the treacherous did not sleep.

And the eagle swooped down to his sandal
And the eagle dove towards his slipper,
To ward off the black snake's harm from him.
To protect him from the harm of the black snake.

And on the rocky slope, who kindled the fire of battle,
And in the market place, he who kindled the fire of turmoil,
While the people had drawn back from beside a hand [wording unclear]?
While the people shrank from his hand.

And on the morning when Amr called for combat,
And Amr the day he called out to Al-Laqit,
Was it Taym that came forth against him, or Adi?
"O orphan of Adiyy, has Umm Adyy given birth or adopted?"
أبينُواmake clear لَنَاto us ويلكُمwoe to you إنّنيindeed I

Make it clear to us—woe to you!—for I
Explain to us, woe to you! I see,
See the truth shining clear to the rightly guided.
The truth has shone for the rightly guided one.
حَسَدتمْyou envied عليّاًAli علىfor فَضْلِهhis excellence
ومَنand whoever نالَattained مَاwhat نَالَهُhe attained it يُحْسَدِis envied
You envied Ali for his excellence,
You envied Ali his superiority,
And whoever attains what he attained is envied.
And whoever attains what he attained is envied.
وخالفتموهُand you opposed him بأهوائِكمْthrough your whims
خِلافَthe defiance of العَبيدِslaves علىagainst السيّدِthe master
And you opposed him through your whims,
And you opposed him with your whims,
As slaves defy their master.
Unlike servants with their master.
وأنكَرْتُموand you denied مِنْfrom سَنَاthe radiance of فضلِهhis excellence
ضياءاًa light أَنَافَrose high علىabove الفرقِدFarqad (a star)
And you denied, from his excellence's radiance,
And you denied the radiance of his virtues,
A light that towered above Farqad.
A brilliance too bright for the niche.
ولاand no عارَshame لِلشَمسِfor the sun إنif أنكرتْdenied

Nor is the sun disgraced if there is denial
There is no shame on the sun if,
Of its light's radiance by an inflamed eye.
The bleary-eyed deny its brilliance.
فَهَلاَّthen why not وقَدْwhen indeed رُمْتُموyou sought شأوَهُhis stature

سبَقْتُمْyou raced ahead إلىto غايةِthe goal of السُّؤددِnobility
Why, then, since you aspired to his stature,
Why then, though you have aimed to disparage him,
Did you not race ahead to the goal of nobility?
Have you not reached the utmost lowliness?

And was any of you but he, in major ritual impurity,
And which of you all, other than him,
Permitted to remain in the mosque?
Was made lawful to reside in the mosque?
