سلامٌPeace علىupon مَنْthe one who لمdid not يَحِلّdwell بمهجتيin my heart
سواهُother than him ولمand did not يملكْhold سواهother than him قِياديmy reins
Peace upon him—none has dwelt in my heart
Greetings to the one whose love resides solely in my heart,
but he, and none but he has held my reins.
And no other owns my devotion but him,
ومَنand the one who حبُّهُhis love راسٍfirmly anchored بقلبيin my heart ومنand the one who بهfor him
غراميmy passion مهماas long as عشتُI live لاnot بِسُعادِfor Suʿād
And upon him whose love is anchored in my heart, and him to whom
Whose love is firmly rooted in my heart, with whom
my passion belongs as long as I live—not to Suʿād.
My passion will always remain, however long I live,
ومَنand the one who لمnot أزلُI have ceased مُذْsince غِبتُI went away عَنهُfrom him مُدَلّهاًdistraught with love
قرينَa companion of صباباتٍpassionate longings حليفَan ally of سُهادِsleeplessness
And upon him: since I went away from him, I have remained distraught with love,
Whom since we parted I've remained awake at night,
a companion of passionate longings, an ally of sleeplessness.
A companion to insomnia, friend to vigilance,
أبيتُI spend the night سميراًa nighttime companion لِلنّجومِto the stars كأنّماas though
فراشيmy bed مَحشيُّstuffed بشوكِwith the thorns of قتادِqatād, a thorny shrub
I spend the night keeping the stars company, as though
I've spent the nights sleepless, as if my bedding were strewn
my bed were stuffed with the thorns of qatād.
With the thorns of succulent plants,
عسىmay اللهGod بعدafter البينseparation يجمعُbring together شملناour company
علىin رَغمspite of حُسّادٍenvious people وغَيْظِand the fury of أَعاديfoes
May God, after separation, reunite us,
May God, after this separation, reunite us
despite the envious and the fury of foes.
Despite the envy of foes and malice of enemies,
وأُشفيand I heal فؤاديmy heart ياO حبيبيmy beloved بنظرةٍwith a glance

And may I heal my heart, my beloved, with a glance
And heal my heart, my beloved, with a glance from you
at you, for my long absence has worn it out.
For longing from afar has made it sick.
