O giver of sleek, long-limbed steeds,

and dusky lances and bright, keen-cutting swords,

O you who rise, through the glory of the house

of Muhammad, to the highest ranks,

O you who hold exalted glory in thrall,

while anyone else is a usurper of lofty glory,

    O you whose perfection's radiance

has filled the eastern and western lands,

O you, to whom praise and thanks

    are forever due from me,

    O my keen-edged sword, which

I use to ransom the souls of calamities,

O my defender amid grave troubles,

when I have neither brother nor companion,

I complain to you of time's harshness,

which gives no redress to those who reproach it.

It diverts the hearts of lovers

    from loved ones and sweethearts.

The arrows break loose, pelting me—

those of its vicissitudes, from every side.

    It never ceases to marshal

for me, battalions of its calamities.

And I have indeed sought refuge in you, rather

    than in non-Arabs and Arabs.

And I trusted in you, a noble man,

rich in praiseworthy qualities and virtues.

    ما عادَ مَنْ يرجوه خائبْ

    And I hoped in the most generous lord;

no one who hopes in him has returned disappointed.

And to your protected domain I sent it,

    radiant, mocking the stars.

It is just as al-Baha said:

    it resembles necklaces upon bosoms.

And in its pages you would imagine

    gold, molten upon the pages.

I have reminded you, not impatient over

a promise, nor disparaging or reproachful.

    But I feared that I

was absent from your auspicious thoughts.

May you ever, against time's calamities—

the black ones—be guarded on every side.
