My two friends, cease reproaching a lovesick youth.

Gently, you two—what do you gain by reproaching me?

You blame my heart for loving—such folly!

Yet you have not led your hearts to love's watering place.

To God I complain: there is a burning anguish in my heart,

Which constricts my breast and makes my heart suffer.

I am afflicted with one from whom I have not won my heart's desire,

And who could grant that I might meet my death through him?

May God protect whoever shows Death the way to a youth

Whose eye never finds respite from pouring out tears.

I bear no hatred of life; rather,

I have found meeting death a greater relief from anguish.

And it is suffering enough in love that I have not found

Any cure but death for the illness lodged within me.

I am afflicted with one unjust in judgment, who in love was not content

With slaying humankind, but went further still, to plunder.

Brimming with youth, he swayed his form,

As the wind's hands play with a tender branch.

Behind the dusky lips lie pebbles of pearl,

And a stream flows with cool, sweet water.

He summoned me to the rule of longing, after

My companions had outgrown their folly and my friends had come to their senses.

And he rose, showing me his glance and his figure,

Saying: Stand straight, if you wish, for thrusts and blows.

They tell me: Do not cast your gaze toward him,

For returning your gaze again and again invites love.

And would it help me not to see him with my eye,

When those beauties are already drawn in my heart?
