أخيmy brother عُذراًpardon me فديتكmay I be your ransom إنindeed بيتيmy house
لأَشبَهis surely more similar بالقبورِto graves منthan البيوتِhouses
My brother, pardon me—may I be your ransom—for my house
My brother, I am sorry, you are dear to me, but my home
is more like graves than houses.
resembles tombs more than abodes
يظلُّremains التّربُthe dust مِنْfrom فوقيabove me وتحتيand beneath me
فتحسبنيso you think me دفيناًburied قَبلbefore موتيmy death
Dust remains above me and beneath me,
Dust shadows me above and beneath
so you would think me buried before my death.
so you may reckon me buried before my death
فقبريso my grave ماwhat حواهُholds it منof ترابٍearth
وكُفْنيand my shroud فيهِin it نَسْجُthe weaving العَنْكَبوتthe spider
So my grave is the earth it contains,
For my grave contains what dirt holds
and my shroud within it is the spider’s web.
and my shroud is woven by spiders
