أما لِلّيالي الماضيات مَعَادُ

أما لِلّيالي الماضيات مَعَادُ

فيهدؤ قلبٌ أو يعودُ رُقادُ

Is there no return for the nights gone by,

The nights of the past shall come again

so that a heart may grow calm, or sleep return?

When a heart finds peace or sleep returns

أما أدركتُ قلبَ النوى لي رحمةٌ

أما أدركتُ قلبَ النوى لي رحمةٌ

فقد طال شوقٌ مقلقٌ وسُهادُ

فقد طال شوقٌ مقلقٌ وسُهادُ

Has no mercy for me reached the heart of separation?

If I ever knew the heart’s wish, it was mercy

For unsettling longing and sleeplessness have lasted long.

For longing restless and wakeful burns

إذا رمتُ بثَّ الشوق يوماً إليكُم

إذا رمتُ بثَّ الشوق يوماً إليكُم

فما لي سوى دمعي الهتون مدادُ

فما لي سوى دمعي الهتون مدادُ

If one day I seek to pour out my longing to you,

When yearning's ink flows from me one day to you

then I have no ink but my streaming tears.

My fading tears make the only supply

لنا أملٌ في الله جلّ جلالُه

لنا أملٌ في الله جلّ جلالُه

وللدّهرِ فينا مقصدٌ ومُرادُ

وللدّهرِ فينا مقصدٌ ومُرادُ

We have hope in God—exalted be His majesty—

We have hope in God, glory to Him

and Time has a purpose and a design for us.

While fate dictates what we must comply
