أقولُ لِعُدّلٍ راموا اصْطباري

وصَبري عنكَ عينُ المستحيلِ

I say to those who wished me to show patience:

I say to reproachers who wished me to be patient:

For me to endure being apart from you is impossibility itself.

Yet for me to bear your absence patiently is impossibility itself.

هبوا وجْدي كما قلتمْ قبيحاً

فدلّوني على الصّبر الجميلِ

فدلّوني على الصّبر الجميلِ

Grant that my passion, as you say, is unseemly—

Grant that my passion is ugly, as you have said;

then show me the way to beautiful patience.
