How long will you reproach me in ignorance?

    Gently—for reproach is baseness.

    Indeed, suffering in love, to

    lovers, is bliss.

Love is nothing but an eye,

    tearful, or an ailing body,

    and torments between the ribs

that neither sleep nor let one sleep.

O you for whom I hide my love,

while God knows both me and him.

What have I to do with my reproachers?

Would anyone of sound mind reproach me over you?

Ah, do you think it will return to me—

with you, that time of old,

    and pleasant living at al-Liwa?

If only pleasant living would endure!

And at Rama, when I gained from

union with loved ones all I sought.

O you who left within my heart

    sparks before which Hell melts.

The delay has dragged on, and there has not blown

a breeze of fulfillment for your promise.

A wealthy man's delaying his creditor—

far be it from you—is a shameful trait.

Should one fear a long delay, when

the people of al-Ghari are his debtors?

May my father and I be ransom for that abode,

and whoever dwells within its earth.

Ah, would that I knew whether to

those places I shall ever come.

And when shall I obtain there, from

rubbing my cheek in dust, what I seek?

And when shall I see myself a servant,

    standing before his grave?

May you be greeted, O grave in al-Ghari,

by a downpour of streaming rain.

Within you lies he who heals with the dust of

    his sandals the ailing eye.

Within you lies he for whom, had they been just,

the stars would have fallen at his slaying.

Within you lies he whose might was dreaded

    by the proud chieftains.

and for one who opposes him, Hell.

    Who but he apportions this

    and that in the hereafter?

The lords of misery turned him away

from what the All-Knowing had bestowed upon him.

Those noble virtues were not honored,

    nor that precedence of old.

Receive it, Commander of the Faithful,

as radiant as pearls strung together.

So perhaps he may attain, through the favor of

the Lord of creation, what he seeks.
