صبٌّ تَحمَّلَ مِن هجرانِكمْ مَالا
He kisses the earth in homage and reverence—
He kisses the earth in veneration and reverence,
a lovesick man who has borne from your abandonment what none could bear.
A lovesick man who has borne from your abandonment [perhaps: what cannot be borne].

You denied his condition after acquaintance—
You denied his plight after having known
with him! How could you, when you had already discerned his state?
Him—and how could you, when you had discerned his state?

He hides his sorrow, but the tongue of sickness reveals it,
He hides his grief, and the tongue of sickness reveals it,
and his tears make him a byword among the people.
And tears make him the subject of proverbs among the people.
اللهَheed God فيconcerning مغرمٍa lover أنْحَلْتموهُyou have made him waste away أسىًwith grief
اللهَ في مغرمٍ أنْحَلْتموهُ أسىً
ماnot حَافَstrayed عنfrom ودكمlove for you يوماًfor a day ولاnor حالاin any state
ما حَافَ عن ودكم يوماً ولا حالا
Fear God in your treatment of a lovesick man whom you have made waste away with grief,
Fear God for a lover whom you have wasted away with grief,
who never swerved from loving you for a day, nor ever turned away.
Who never strayed from love for you, on any day or in any state.

He has never ceased lamenting, since your caravan mounts were reined for departure,
He has kept lamenting, since your riding camels were bridled,
the dwellings left desolate, bereft of you, and the ruins.
Dwellings left desolate without you, and ruins.
