عِندَfor سُكَّانthe dwellers of الحِمَىthe sanctuary وَلَهُpassionate longing
Do you think he can forget love, while he feels
Does anguish still torment his mind
Longing for the dwellers of the sanctuary?
Among the dwellers of the ruins left behind?

فصَّلunfolded in detail الهجرانُseparation مُجْمَلَهُits condensed whole
He is love-stricken, with sorrow in his heart;
With a heart so full of grief and pain
Separation has unfolded what was condensed in it.
Parted by absence that split them in twain
عَظُمتْgrew grave أسقامُهhis ailments فغداso he became
لاnot يَراهsees him مَنْwhoever تأمَّلَهُlooked closely at him
His ailments grew grave, so he became
His sickness grew, and he's but a shade
Invisible even to one who looked closely at him.
Of one admired before love did fade
لَوif رأىsaw مَنthe one who ظَلّkept يعذلُهreproaching him
وجْهَthe face of مَنْthe one who فيin الحُبlove أنحلَهُmade him waste away
If the one who kept reproaching him saw
If he who did unjustly blame
The face of the one who made him waste away in love,
Saw whom love devastated, his shame!

إنif قضىhe died وجداًfrom longing يحقَis warranted لهfor him
He would say, 'As for loving you, there is no blame;
"I bear you no ill will," he might say
If he dies of longing, he is justified.'
"If passion has led you astray."
