لاَ تُكَثّرْ فدَتكَ نَفْسي عتابي

لاَ تُكَثّرْ فدَتكَ نَفْسي عتابي

ودع الخَوضَ في الهَوى والتَّصابي

ودع الخَوضَ في الهَوى والتَّصابي

Do not reproach me so much—may my soul ransom you.

Do not increase, my soul, your reproach of me,

And leave off delving into passion and youthful dalliance.

And leave off wandering in passion and rapture.

شنِّفِ السَّمعَ لي بذكْر عليٍّ

شنِّفِ السَّمعَ لي بذكْر عليٍّ

خير مَاشٍ يسيرُ فوق التُراب

خير مَاشٍ يسيرُ فوق التُراب

Adorn my ears with the mention of Ali,

Let your hearing delight in the mention of Ali,

The best of those who walk upon the dust.

The best walker over dust.

وبَنِيهِ فَهُمْ أولُو الفَضْلِ حقّاً

وبَنِيهِ فَهُمْ أولُو الفَضْلِ حقّاً

سَلْ بهذَا إن شِئْت أيُّ كِتاب

سَلْ بهذَا إن شِئْت أيُّ كِتاب

And his sons, for they are truly endowed with virtue.

And his sons, who truly are the foremost in merit—

Ask any book about this, if you wish.
