لطالبه إذا سِيمَ النّوالاَ
And a black man whose palm never grows moist with bounty
A hand uncalloused will not darken
for his petitioner, when he is asked for a gift.
From seeking, when fate's cup runs over
أقولُI say لطالبِto the seeker of الجدْوىbounty ترفقْgo gently
أقولُ لطالبِ الجدْوى ترفقْ
فمنfor from عِندthe presence of الظَّلامdarkness طلبتَyou sought مَالاَwealth
فمن عِند الظَّلام طلبتَ مَالاَ
I say to the seeker of bounty: go gently,
I say to one who'd worldly profit reap
for you have sought wealth from darkness.
Go gently if you'd ask the shades for treasure
