    Two of learning’s instruments have turned back

    the reins of my striving from the ambitions I pursued.

    وَقُلَّمُ الحَظِّ تَحريفٌ مِنَ القَلَمِ

    As for the inkwell, its crime has bloodied my body;

    and ‘clipped fortune’ is a distortion of ‘the pen.’

    And the pages of privation have adorned an inkwell for me

    that drives away from me the grazing herds of wealth and blessings.

    And learning knows that I, when I take it up

    for my protection, am a fugitive, bereft of safeguards.
