ياah قاتَلَmay strike down اللَهُGod اِبنَson of حَربٍHarb لَقَدindeed
أَطالَprolonged إِتعابيwearing me out عَلىwith عَمدِdeliberate intent
Ah, may God strike down Ibn Harb! He has indeed
kept wearing me out on purpose
بِطَيلَسانٍwith a shawl خِلتُI imagined أَنَّthat البِلىdecay
تَطلُبُهُpursues it بِالوِترِfor vengeance وَالحِقدِand rancor
with a shawl I imagined Decay
was pursuing out of vengeance and rancor.
أَجِدُّI strive فيin رَفويmy darning لَهُfor it وَالبِلىwhile decay
يَلهوtoys بِهِwith it فيin الهَزلِjest وَالجِدِّand earnestness
I strive to darn it, while Decay
toys with it in jest and earnest.
ذَكَّرَنيit reminded me of الجَثَّةَthe corpse لِمّاwhen غَداset out
أَصحابُهاits companions مِنهاaway from it عَلىin حَردِanger
It reminded me of the corpse, when off went
its companions, leaving it in anger.
إِنif أَتهَمَheads for Tihamah الرَفاءُthe darner فيin رَفوِهِhis darning
مَضىwent onward بِهِwith it التَمزيقُtearing فيinto نَجدِNajd
If the darner heads for Tihamah in his darning,
tearing carries it onward into Najd.
غَنَّيتُهُI sang to it لَمّاwhen مَضىit went راحِلاًdeparting
ياO واحِديmy only one تَرَكتَنيyou left me وَحديby myself
I sang to it when it went on its way:
O my only one, you have left me alone!
