O mother of Sawda—rather, O mother of Abbad!

Have you any provisions for a stranger far from home?

Our people will not treat us fairly unless we leave them,

In agreement to set things right through disruption.

Tell Rabi'a, its highest and its lowest:

We are a people settled at the valley's navel.

And whoever settles among us is looked to for light,

And our guest judges as he pleases in the assembly.

Indeed, we have rejected your two crippling terms

Of humiliation, which no desert-dweller would accept.

And you have imposed upon us, in our life as neighbors,

The terms al-Khallaj imposed on Ghawth son of Hannad.

And after that, you have nothing

Except boasting of fathers and grandfathers.

You have no help when it is hoped for

For a stranger; nor [unclear verb] for you any [unclear noun].
