عَجِّلاhasten, you two اليَومَtoday صاحِبَيَّmy two companions رَواحاdeparture
وَاِسقِيانيand give me drink, you two قَبلَbefore التَرَوُّحِsetting out in the evening راحاwine
Hasten your departure today, my two companions,
My friends, hasten today with a farewell drink
and give me wine before setting out.
And quench my thirst before I depart
عَلَّperhaps ماwhat بالفُؤادِin the heart يَذهَبُdeparts عَنهُfrom it

إِنَّindeed عَقليmy mind أَمسىbecame by evening غَريباًa stranger مُراحاdriven away
Perhaps what is in the heart will leave it;
Perhaps what troubles my heart will vanish
for my mind has become a stranger, driven away.
For my mind has become a wandering stranger

Where is Layla? And where is Layla—and Layla?
Where is Layla, where is Layla, where is Layla
She has sickened healthy men besides us.
Did she make other men well while I'm sick?

You see no lover who has fallen for Layla
No lover like me clings to Layla
and meets death through her at evening.
And meets death because of her departure

A cooing dove stirred her memory in me;
The cooing of the doves reminded me of her
reminded of its mate among the branches, it lamented.
The boughs echoed the call of those long gone
لَقِيَتmet تَغلِبٌTaghlib كَهَلكَةِlike the destruction of عادٍAd
إِذwhen أَتاهُمcame to them هَولُthe terror of العَذابِthe punishment صَباحاin the morning
Taghlib met destruction like that of Ad,
Tughlib met the same fate as the people of Aad
when the terror of punishment came upon them in the morning.
When the horror of punishment came upon them one morning
وَنَهاهُمand warned them نَبِيُّهُمtheir prophet يَومَon the day of ذاكُمthat, addressing you all

Their prophet warned them that day,
Their prophet warned them that day
and called them openly to God.
And called them sincerely to God
وَنَهَيناand we warned عَنagainst حَربِناwar with us تَغلِبَTaghlib العُشthe night-blind, first part

وَcompletion of 'night-blind' فَماso not عافتِshunned البَلاaffliction وَالمَتاحاand fated doom
We warned night-blind Taghlib against fighting us;
Yet we were banned from fighting Tughlib
yet they did not shun affliction and fated doom
And so the country was not safe from trials
دونَbefore أَنthat أَبصَرَتsaw خُيولاًhorses لِبَكرٍbelonging to Bakr

until they saw horses belonging to Bakr,
Before they saw the steeds of Bakr
and Indian swords and spears.
The Indian swords or the spears
فَقَتَلناso we killed بِوارِداتٍat Waridat رِجالاًmen
إِذwhen بَداappeared كاضِمُpent-up, reading uncertain الضَميرِinward feeling ضُباحاbarking cries
So at Waridat we killed men,
We killed men with sudden raids
when pent-up feeling burst into barking cries.
When the vile one appeared at dawn
وَلَقىand met القَومُthe people بِالذَنائِبِat al-Dhana'ib منّاfrom us
إِذwhen كَشَفناwe stripped away الخُلودَimmortality مَوتاًdeath ذُباحاby slaughter
At al-Dhana'ib the people met at our hands,
The people met disgrace from us
when we swept immortality aside, a death by slaughter.
As we ended the undying with slaughter
وَأَسَرناand we captured عَدِيَّهاtheir Adi وَاِصطَنَعناand we bestowed favor

بِيَدٍwith a kindness لَوif only أَثابَhe repaid مِنّاfrom us نَجاحاsuccess
We captured their Adi and showed him favor,
We captured their enemies and pretended
with a kindness—if only he had repaid the good he gained from us.
To have done it with an effortless hand
سَفَّهواthey deemed foolish حِلمَناour forbearance فَلَمّاthen when أَثارواthey rose up
لِلِقاءِto meet الكُماةِthe armored warriors طاحواthey fell طِياحاheadlong
They scorned our forbearance; when they rose
They disrespected our patience, and when
to meet the armored warriors, they fell headlong.
They roused the argument, they were scattered
لَقواthey met أُسدَlions of غابَةٍa forest وَكُهولاًand seasoned men
وَقَناًand spears تَصرَعُstrike down الكُماةَthe armored warriors سِفاحاwith bloodshed
They met forest lions and seasoned men,
They met a fierce lion of the jungle
and spears that strike armored warriors down, spilling blood.
And a wild ass that kills the argumentative in battle
يَطرُدونَthey drive الخُيولَthe horses فيthrough رَهَجِswirling clouds of النَقthe dust, first part

عِcompletion of 'dust' وَيفرونَand they cleave بِالسُيوفِwith swords السِلاحاarmor
They drive the horses through clouds of dust,
They drive off the horses in the frenzy of war
and cut through armor with their swords.
And flee with swords bare of sheaths
سايَحواsent wandering, reading uncertain شَيخَناour elder جُحَيشاًalone وَكانواand they would
كُلَّماwhenever أَخرَجوهُthey brought him out لِلحَربِto war ساحاhe roamed
They sent our elder wandering alone, and
They slandered our Sheikh Juheish
whenever they brought him out to war, he ranged forth.
Dragging him out for battle again and again
وَلَقَدand indeed كانَhe was كارِهاًaverse لِلَّذيto what كاwas, first part
نَcompletion of 'was' رَجاءًhoping بِأَنthat يَكونَthere would be الرباحاgain
He had indeed been averse to what had
Though he disliked the situation he was in
happened, hoping that there would be gain.
Hoping the outcome would be favorable
فَأَصابواthen they struck بُجَيرَBujayr مِنwith غَيرِno جرمٍoffense

كانَhad been مِنهُfrom him إِذwhen صادَفوهُthey encountered him كِفاحاface to face
Then they struck Bujayr for no offense
Yet without cause they struck Bujeer
of his, when they encountered him face to face.
Who had struggled against them when they found him
ضَرَّجواthey stained with blood ثَوبَهُhis garment وَقالواand they said سَفاهاًfoolishly
أَنتَyou بِالشِسعِfor the sandal-strap مِنof كُلَيبٍKulayb صُراحاplainly
They bloodied his garment and said in folly:
They stained his garment and foolishly said
You are plainly payment for a sandal-strap of Kulayb's.
"You are the stirrup for Kulayb's saddle"
فَأَصابَthen struck القِتالُthe fighting آنافَproud noses بكرٍBakr
فَأَبادَتso she annihilated بِهِwith it الرِجالَthe men الصِباحاhandsome
Then battle struck Bakr's proud noses,
So the fighting struck the skulls of Bakr
and with it they annihilated the handsome men.
And in the morning their men were destroyed
ورَجَتand hoped تَغلِبٌTaghlib تُعيدَto bring back كُلَيباًKulayb
فَأَطَحناso we brought down سَراتَهُمtheir chiefs حَيثُwhere طاحاhe fell
Taghlib hoped to bring Kulayb back,
Tughlib surged to restore Kulayb
so we brought their chiefs down where he had fallen.
But we crushed their heads where they fell
قَدindeed تَرَكناwe left نِساءَهُمtheir women مُعوِلاتٍwailing

مُعلِناتٍproclaiming aloud مَعَwith البُكاءِweeping النُواحاlamentation
We have left their women wailing,
We left their women bereft
raising lamentation aloud along with their weeping.
Wailing loudly in their grief
بَقِيَتremained بَعدَهُafter him الجَليلَةُal-Jalila تَبكيweeping

وَالخَرودُand the shy maiden العَيطاءُlong-necked تَدعوcalls out لَحاحاinsistently
Al-Jalila remained after him, weeping,
After him remained the noble woman weeping
and the shy, long-necked maiden called out insistently.
And the screeching camel calling out
وَتَرَكناand we left أُصَيبِياتٍlittle children صِغاراًsmall
وَذَرارىand offspring يَحتَسونَthey sip القِراحاplain water
And we left small, young children,
We left young widows
and offspring sipping plain water.
And orphans drinking leftover broth
كانَwas سَهمُthe lot of النِساءِthe women جِباهٍforeheads, sense unclear
وَأَجَلناand we circulated عَلىover الرِجالِthe men القِداحاthe lot-arrows
The women's lot was foreheads [sense unclear],
The mark of the women was striking foreheads
and we cast lot-arrows over the men.
While we hit the men with death blows
وَتَرَكناand we left دِيارَthe dwellings of تَغلِبَTaghlib قَفراًa wasteland
وَكَسَرناand we broke مِنَof الغُواةِthe misguided الجَناحاthe wing
And we left Taghlib's dwellings a wasteland,
We left the lands of Tughlib barren
and broke the wing of the misguided.
And clipped the wings of the tyrants
وَتَرَand you see, reading uncertain الزئرَal-Zir يَمعَجُtwists القَولَthe speech فيناabout us
بِعدَماafter صارَhe became مُفرَداalone مُستَباحاopen to attack
And you see al-Zir twisting words about us,
The lion continued roaring words against us
after he became alone and open to attack.
After he was left isolated and violated
هُوَhe فيin الشَرِّwickedness قبائِلٌtribes, sense unclear وَمُرَوٍّand a plotter, uncertain

لَيتَهُif only he ماتَhad died قَبلَهاbefore it فَاِستَراحاand so found rest
In wickedness he is whole tribes, and a plotter [wording unclear];
He is the worst of tribes, a deluded one
if only he had died before it and found rest!
If only he had died before her and found rest
