Your reproach can neither bind nor unbind.

My blood is love's to spill, if that pleases love.

Away with you and what you have concealed from me; for

feigned ignorance is merely ignorance to those who recognize it.

My soul and family for her who, when they hint to her

of me, says, 'My soul and family are his ransom.'

At the gathering, there was talk of me and of her,

and talk of us became the quarter's people's preoccupation.

Love is nothing but their saying little and much

about us, being right in their suspicions and being wrong.

My tenderness refused all but what passion demands,

and my resolve all but what judgment and reason demanded.

How astonishing that I remain hidden and unseen,

though rugged land and plain have become filled with me!

An outcast, yet I have a refuge; fair game, yet I have a sanctuary.

Alone, yet I have companions; a stranger, yet I have family.

    قُصَاراي إِمّا النَّصْرُ أَو ما جَنَى النَّصْلُ

    I shall strive, whether for death or for my wishes;

my final outcome: either victory or what the blade reaps.

For if my ambition does not carry me to my goals,

and no yarn of gray has been woven through my locks,

then may my eye never see, nor my tongue speak,

nor my hand strike, nor my foot walk.

And whoever understands the matter I understand

finds every difficult thing wholly easy to attain.

Take honor wherever you find it,

for there is no good in a life of humiliation.

And a man has a guide in nature's call,

if forbearance and nobility do not hold him back from it.

    فَلِلْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَدْنُو وَلِلْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَعْلُو

    This nature is from dust, and the soul from on high;

so a man may sink low, and a man may rise high.
