أَسْقامُهُhis ailments وَشُجونُهand his sorrows وَدُمُوعُهُand his tears
What his ribs enfold was betrayed
His ailments grew with what his ribs bend over,
By his ailments, his sorrows, and his tears.
His sorrows and his tears and his grievances.

His eyes brought sorrow to his heart,
His glances brought to his beloved sorrow
And burning anguish, a fraction of which melts his whole being.
And intimacy that with some of it melts his whole being.
مُغْرىًenamored بِوَسْنَانِof one drowsy اللِّحَاظِthe glances وَإِنَّماand only
فيin حُبِّهِlove of him هَجَرَforsook المُحِبَّthe lover هُجُوعُهُhis sleep
Enamored of one with drowsy glances—and only
Tempted by the softness of the cheeks, though indeed
In loving him has the lover's sleep deserted him.
In his love, the lover was deprived of his fervor.
أَبْدَىhe revealed مُحَيَّاهُhis face وَأَسْبَلَand let fall شَعْرَهُhis hair

He revealed his face and let his hair fall,
He showed his smile and let down his hair,
And the full moon's rising is beautiful in the dark.
And the moon looks beautiful rising in the darkness.
لِلطَّرْفِfor the eye فيهِin him سَناًradiance وَفيهِand in him بَارِقٌa lightning flash
هَذاthis وذَاكَand that يَرُوقُهُdelights it وَيَروعُهُand frightens it
For the eye, there is radiance in him, and a flash of lightning;
For the eye he has glory and in it a flashing,
This and that delight it and frighten it.
This and that pleases him and makes him shudder.
دَبَّتْcrept عَقارِبُscorpions صُدْغِهof his temple فيacross خَدِّهِhis cheek
فَغَداso he became وقَلْبِيand my heart فيin الهَوَىlove مَلْسُوعُهُhis stung victim
The scorpions of his temple crept across his cheek,
The minutes of his temple crept on his cheek,
So there he was, my heart in love his stung victim.
So he became while my heart in love is burnt.
ياO وَافِرَlavish with الهَجْرِestrangement الطَّويلِlong تَولُّهيmy lovesick yearning
خَبَبٌa trot أَلاis there not وَعْدٌa promise يَجُودُis generous سَرِيعُهُits swift fulfillment
O you so lavish with long estrangement, my lovesick yearning
O source of long estrangement, beguile me,
Is a trot—is there no promise generous in its swift fulfillment?
Indeed, a sincere promise quickly fulfills.
نَبِّهrouse جُفُونَكَyour eyelids مِنْfrom نُعَاسِthe drowsiness فُتُورِهَاtheir languor
لِتَرىso you may see مُحبّاًa lover ذابَmelted فِيكَfor you جَمِيعُهُall of him
Rouse your eyelids from their languid drowsiness,
Awaken your drowsy eyelids
To see a lover whose whole being has melted for you.
To see a lover melted in you entirely.
ماnot أَنْتَyou ياO طَرْفيmy eye بِمُتَّهَمٍunder suspicion عَلىconcerning
سِرِّيmy secret فَكَيْفَso how إِلىto الوُشَاةِthe talebearers تُذيعُهُdo you divulge it
You, O my eye, are above suspicion concerning
My eye, you are not accused of
My secret—how, then, do you divulge it to the talebearers?
My secret, so how to the slanderers spread it?
حَمَّلتنيyou made me bear ثِقْلَthe weight الهَوىof love وَوَضَعْتَهُand you laid it down
عِنْدِيwith me فَهَلْso is مَحْمُولُهُwhat is borne of it مَوْضُوعُهُwhat is laid down of it
You made me bear love's weight and laid it down
You burdened me the weight of love and put it
With me—so is what is borne the same as what is laid down?
With me, so is its carried its placed?
مَنْwho ليfor me بِمَنْwith the one who لَوْif سَامbid for قَلْبِيmy heart غَيْرُهُsomeone other than him

Who can bring him to me? Were another to bid for my heart,
Who is for me the one if he was patient with my heart,
I would not sell it this morning for the whole world.
I would not in the morning trade it for the world.
دَعْنِيleave me وَسَهْمُand the arrow اللَّحْظِof the glance مِنْهُfrom him فَإِننّيfor I am
صَبٌّa lovesick lover كَماas شاءَwilled الغَرامُpassion صَرِيعُهُits fallen victim
Leave me with the arrow of his glance, for I am
Leave me as the arrow of the gaze is from it,
A lovesick lover, passion's fallen victim, as it willed.
For I am torrential as the passion wished subdued.
