لَوْif أَنَّthat قَلْبَكَyour heart لِيtoward me يَرقّgrows tender ويَرْحَمُand shows mercy
ماnot بِتُّI spent the night مِنْfrom خَوْفِfear of الهَوىlove أَتأَلَّمُI suffer
Were your heart tender toward me and merciful,
I would not spend the night suffering for fear of love.
وَمِنَand among العَجَائِبِthe marvels أنّنيthat I والسُّهْمُwhile the share ليis mine
مِنْfrom ناظِريْكَyour two eyes وفيand in فُؤادِيmy heart أَسْهُمُarrows
And wondrous it is that I have a share
From your two eyes, yet arrows lodge in my heart.
دَارَيْتُI placated أَهْلَكَyour family فيin هَواكَlove of you وَهُمْthough they are عِدىًenemies
وَلأَجْلِand for the sake of عَيْنٍone eye ألفُa thousand عَيْنٍeyes تُكْرَمُare honored
I placated your family for love of you, though they are foes;
And for one eye’s sake, a thousand eyes are honored.
يَاO جَامِعَyou who unite الضّدّينِthe two opposites فيin وَجَناتِهِhis cheeks
مَاءٌwater يَشِفُّis translucent عليهupon it نارٌa fire تُضْرَمُis kindled
O you who unite two opposites in your cheeks:
Translucent water, with a fire kindled upon it.
عَجبيmy wonder لِطَرْفِكَat your gaze وَهْوَwhile it is ماضٍkeen لَمْhas not يَزَلْceased
فَعلامَwhy, then يُكْسَرُis broken (lowered) عِنْدَمَاwhen تَتَكَلَّمُyou speak
I marvel at your gaze, which has always been keen—
Why, then, is it lowered when you speak?
أَمِنَis it part of المروءَةِhonorable conduct والتَّواصُلُwhile union مُمكِنٌis possible
وَالدَّهْرُand time يَسمَحُis generous والحَوادِثُand misfortunes نُوَّمُare asleep
Is it honorable—when union is possible,
And time is generous and misfortunes sleep—
أنّيthat I أروحُI depart وَسَلْبُand the withholding of رَدِّيmy reply فيin الهَوَىlove
قَدْindeed حَلَّhas become lawful والإيجابُwhile assent مِنْكَfrom you مُحرَّمُis forbidden
That I depart—denying me a reply in love
Has become lawful, while your assent is forbidden—
وأَبيتُand I spend the night مَبْذُولَfreely shedding الدُّموعِtears مُعذّباًtormented
كَلِفاًlove-stricken وَأَنْتَwhile you are مُمنَّعٌwell-protected وَمُنعَّمُand pampered
And spend the night pouring out tears, tormented,
Love-stricken, while you are guarded and pampered?
ياO مُتْهِمَاyou who accuse قَلْبيmy heart بِسَلْوةِof forgetting حُبِّهِits love
هَيْهَاتَfar from possible! يُنْجِدُهrescues it وَأَنْتَwhile you are المُتْهِمُthe accuser
O you who accuse my heart of forgetting its love,
No one can rescue it while you are the accuser!
