أَراكُarak tree الحِمَىthe protected pasture لَمّاwhen شَدتْهُsang to it السَّواجِعُthe songbirds
تَثَنَّىswayed كَماas though هَبَّتْblew عليهupon it الزُّعازِعُthe fierce winds
The arak tree of the protected pasture, when the songbirds sang to it,
swayed as though fierce winds had blown upon it.
فأَطْرَبَهُso it delighted him مِنْfrom شَدْوِهَاits song لَحْنُthe melody سَاجِعٍof a singing bird
يَنُوحُmourns عَلىfor أَحْبابِهِits loved ones فَهْوَand it is سَاجِعُa singing bird
The melody of a singing bird delighted it with its song;
the bird mourns its loved ones, yet still sings.
فَسِرُّso the secret الهَوَىof passion لِلصَّبِّfor the lovesick one بِالدَّمْعِthrough tears ذائعٌrevealed
كَمَاjust as قَلْبُهُhis heart بَيْنَamong المحامِلِthe traveling litters ضَائِعُlost
So the lover’s secret passion is betrayed by tears,
just as his heart is lost among the traveling litters.
علىthough أَنّthat أيّامَthe days الوِصَالِof union وَدائِعٌthings held in trust
وَلاand there بُدَّmust be يَوْماًone day أَنْthat تُرَدَّbe returned الوَدائِعُthe entrusted things
Yet the days of union are things held in trust,
and one day all such trusts must be returned.
وَلَيْلٍand a night جَلاrevealed فيهduring it الطَّلاthe wine أَنْجُمthe stars الطِلاof the young gazelles
وَهُنَّand they أُفُولٌsetting بَيْنَناamong us وَطَوالِعُand rising
One night, wine revealed the stars of the young gazelles,
and among us those stars were setting and rising.
وَقَدْand already غَابَwas absent وَاشِيناour talebearer وَنامَand slept رَقِيبُناour watcher
وَقَدْand indeed صَدَقَتْنَاpromised us truly بِاللّقاءِa meeting المَطالِعُthe rising stars
Our talebearer was gone, and our watcher slept;
the rising stars had truly promised us a meeting.
وَنَحْنُand we سُجُودٌbowing فيin جَوامِعsanctuaries لَذَّةٍof delight
مِنَfrom الأُنْسِintimacy والإْبرِيقُand the ewer لِلكَأْسِtoward the cup رَاكِعُbowing
We bowed in the sanctuaries of delight
born of intimacy, while the ewer bowed toward the cup.
وَطَرْفِand the steed الصّباof the east wind فيin حَلبَةِthe racecourse الرَوضِof the meadow راكضٌracing

The steed of the east wind raced through the meadow’s course,
and the eye of dew wept on the rose’s cheek,
إلىuntil أَنْthat تَجَلَّىappeared صُبْحُهits dawn فَكَأَنَّهُand it was as though
وُجُوهُfaces العَذَارىof maidens أَبْرَزَتْهَاbrought them into view البَراقِعُthe veils
until its dawn appeared, as though it were
maidens’ faces brought into view by their veils.
فَودَّعناso we said farewell لاnot عَنْfrom مَلَالٍweariness وَلَاnor قِلىًhatred
وقُلناand we said دَنَاdrew near التَّفْرِيقُseparation وَالشَّمْلُwhile the company جَامِعُwas together
We said farewell without weariness or hatred,
and said: separation draws near while we are still together.
