أَيُّهَاO you الهاجِرُthe one who forsakes حَدّثْtell
أَيُّهَا الهاجِرُ حَدّثْ
نِيَme (completes 'tell me') مَاwhat أَوْجَبَcaused هَجْرَكْyour estrangement
نِيَ مَا أَوْجَبَ هَجْرَكْ
O you who forsake me, tell
me what has caused your estrangement.
ماwhat الَّذيthat which لَوْif جُدْتَyou were generous بِالوَصْwith union (word continues)
ما الَّذي لَوْ جُدْتَ بِالوَصْ
لِcompletion of 'union' حَبيبيmy beloved كانَwould have ضَرَّكْharmed you
لِ حَبيبي كانَ ضَرَّكْ
What harm, had you granted me union,
would it have done you, my beloved?
أَيُّهاO you الصَّابِرُthe patient one عَنِّيaway from me
أَيُّها الصَّابِرُ عَنِّي
لَيتنيwould that I أُعْطِيتُwas given صَبْرَكْyour patience
لَيتني أُعْطِيتُ صَبْرَكْ
O you who can bear being without me,
would that I had been given your patience!
أَيُّهاO you الجَاهِلُthe one ignorant of قَدْرِيmy worth
أَيُّها الجَاهِلُ قَدْرِي
أَناI لاnot أَجْهَلُam ignorant of قَدْرَكْyour worth
أَنا لا أَجْهَلُ قَدْرَكْ
O you who do not know my worth,
I am not ignorant of your worth.
أَيُّهاO you الشاغِلُthe one occupying أَسْراsecrets (word continues)
أَيُّها الشاغِلُ أَسْرا
رِيَmy (completes 'my secrets') ماhow أَفْرَغَempty; free of care سِرَّكْyour inner heart
رِيَ ما أَفْرَغَ سِرَّكْ
O you who fill my secret thoughts,
how empty of care your own heart is!
ياO مُحيَّاهُhis face أنارَmay illuminate الbeginning of 'God'
يا مُحيَّاهُ أنارَ ال
لَهُcompletion of 'God' فيin العَالمِthe world بَدْرَكْyour full moon
لَهُ في العَالمِ بَدْرَكْ
O face of his, may God make
your full moon shine in the world.
قَدْindeed يَئِسْنَاwe have despaired مِنْكَfrom you خَيْراًany good
قَدْ يَئِسْنَا مِنْكَ خَيْراً
فَكفاناso may He spare us اللَّهُGod شرَّكْyour evil
فَكفانا اللَّهُ شرَّكْ
We have despaired of any good from you;
so may God spare us your evil.
