O visitor who made the darkness of night his mount,

    Welcome, despite the slanderers—welcome!

Remove the veil and cast off your cloak, revealing

A face like morning and a figure like youth.

And part your lips in a smile, for my tears guarantee

That the flash of your teeth will not be rainless lightning.

    فَخَلعْتُ فِيكَ عِذَارَ عِلمْي أَشْيبا

    Love of you has undone my attachment to ascetic piety;

So for you I cast off my learning’s bridle, though gray-haired.

So pass me what resembles your teeth in delicacy,

Offering me a fragrance as sweet as your own—

Tawny wine—how often it has stolen reason and restraint

From us and given us infatuation and rapture,

In an arena where, whenever it coursed within its bounds,

    Reason’s steed, though cautious, stumbled.
