    Now he has a cause for his dejection:

    a smiling mouth whose saliva holds cool sweetness.

    A heart—as forgetfulness is understood—has had

    a flame course through it, as passion is known.

    مَتَى تَساوَى التُّرابُ والذَّهبُ

    Lovers do not claim my rank;

    when were dust and gold ever equal?

    I weep when they complain, and lament if

    they weep; I meet my death when they sob.

    For one in whose supple form and eyes

    a bough is trailed and sword blades are unsheathed.

    عَنْ ودِّهِ بِالجَمَالِ مُنْتَقِبُ

    Taking vengeance through rejection, withdrawing

    from his affection, veiled in beauty;

    turning away, obstructing affection,

    secluding himself in passion, hiding away.

    Ah, how dear his home, though it be distant,

    and how dear his people, though they be angry!

    And how dear al-Sham, if through Husam

    al-Din its plains and dunes rise high!

    I fear no calamities, for al-Hasan the

    beneficent is he whose protection I seek.

    From a people who have risen high and proved noble

    in deed, and good in stock when they trace their descent.

    وَإِنْ أُمِرَّت أَيَّامُنَا عَذُبُوا

    If time grows dark, their beauty shines;

    and if our days turn bitter, they are sweet.

    وَإِنْ أَرادُوا مَكَارِهاً غَلَبُوا

    If they seek noble deeds, they attain them;

    and if they intend harm, they prevail.

    Never, as they strove for glory and raised

    its edifice, did fatigue hold them back.

    A people who cleave whatever is bound by

    calamity—and who can cleave what they bind?

    وتَسْتَقِرُّ القُلُوبُ إِنْ رَكِبِوا

    And eyes find rest when they alight;

    and hearts find peace when they mount.

    مِنْ أَجْلِ هَذَا تُبْدِي الحَيَا السُّحُبُ

    And the clouds blush before their palms;

    that is why the clouds display rain.

    Their honor is silver, and their fragrance

    perfumes the universe wherever they go.

    Never have they shone in the sunlight of knowledge

    without strangers growing keen-witted through their intelligence.

    and if far from a companion, they are sought after.

    but neither reached their level nor came close.

    What your noble lineage merits is enough for you.

    O you who laugh while life frowns,

    and stand firm while the mountains shake!

    of the ban-tree, its branch, while others are firewood.

    حَسْبِيَ أَنِّي إِلَيْكَ أَنْتَسِبُ

    Accept praises with which I sought no gifts;

    it is enough for me that I belong to you.
