    May God exalt the champions of the eyes,

    and make the reign of those eyelids everlasting,

    and double their power through languor,

    and renew the blessing of beauty kept inviolate,

    وَإِنْ جَارَتْ على قَلْبِي الطَّعِينِ

    and preserve the sway of those curves among us,

    even if they tyrannize over my pierced heart;

    عَلَى قَدٍّ بِهِ هَيَفُ الغُصُونِ

    and spread the shade of that hair of his

    over a figure with the slenderness of boughs;

    and safeguard the veil of those front teeth,

    even if they turn the heart toward sorrows.

    For how many such meanings there are in love,

    even if they make my tears like flowing water.

    I have borne my sleeplessness and gray hair—this

    upon my head, and that upon my eyes.
