How long shall my lot with you be deprivation?

And how long this coldness and estrangement?

Where are the nights gone by, when we were

    lovers in passion and neighbors?

And where is the affection I knew to be true?

And where is the pledge, and where are the oaths?

Estrangement and rejection have helped you to

kill me, and I have no helpers against you.

O absent, reproachful one, long has this

estrangement lasted! Is drawing near possible?

Time is now pleased—as are the reproachers and the

envious—with me, yet you are angry.

So be well, and pay no heed to hearts

filled with deadly longing and sorrows.

And sleep carefree, and say this and that

from all that Tlemcen has brought forth.
