    How can a captive of glances escape captivity?

    And how can a lover of lips recover from intoxication?

    And especially a lovesick man who melts with longing,

    For what surpasses all reckoning, for a waist so slender.

    فَيَفْرِقُ من نَهْرٍ ويَغْرَقُ في نَهْرِ

    The talebearer threatens him, and he weeps with longing;

    So he fears a rebuke and drowns in a river.

    He shone as a star on beauty's horizon,

    With a pearl-bright star's gleam and a smile revealing pearls.

    So in every sky, the dust of passion rises from him,

    And in every region, the patter of rain comes from him.
