He says, gazing out with a gazelle’s sidelong glance,
He says, having gazed with a gazelle’s glance,
as the bough swayed him amid the leafy folds of gauzy robes:
And swayed the bough amid the leaves of thin robes:
أَأَقْتلُكُمْshall I kill you (plural)? بِطَرْفيwith my glance أَمْor بِعِطْفِيwith my curving flank
أَأَقْتلُكُمْ بِطَرْفي أَمْ بِعِطْفِي

فَقُلْتُ بِمَا تَشَا فَالكُلُّ ذابِلْ
“Shall I slay you all with my glance, or with my supple turn?”
“Shall I kill you with my glance or with my supple form?”
I said, “Whichever you wish—for each is a slender lance.”
So I said, “With whichever you wish—each is a slender spear.”

May God’s peace, as long as the north wind blows,

Rest upon those curving forms and gracious ways.
