وَافَىhe came بِوَجْهٍwith a face كَالهِلَالِlike the crescent moon مُرَكَّبٍset
وَافَى بِوَجْهٍ كَالهِلَالِ مُرَكَّبٍ
فِيin قَامَةٍa figure غَضِّيَّةٍtender هَيْفَاءِslender-waisted
فِي قَامَةٍ غَضِّيَّةٍ هَيْفَاءِ
He came, his crescent-like face set
He came with a face like the crescent moon, set
upon a tender, slender-waisted form;
Upon a tender, slender-waisted figure,
وَبِمُقْلَةٍand with an eye خَفَقَfluttered الفُؤَادُthe heart وَقَدْand indeed رَنَتْit gazed
وَبِمُقْلَةٍ خَفَقَ الفُؤَادُ وَقَدْ رَنَتْ
إنَّindeed الخفوقَthe fluttering يَكُونُoccurs عَنْfrom سَوْدَاءِa dark eye (also black bile)
إنَّ الخفوقَ يَكُونُ عَنْ سَوْدَاءِ
and with an eye—when it gazed intently—the heart fluttered,
And with an eye whose gaze made the heart flutter.
for fluttering comes from a little black spot.
Indeed, the fluttering comes from a dark eye.

وافى بِوجهٍ كَالهِلالِ مُركَّبِ
فيin قامةٍa figure غَضِّيَّةٍtender هَيفاءِslender-waisted
في قامةٍ غَضِّيَّةٍ هَيفاءِ
He came, his crescent-like face set
He came with a face like the crescent moon, set
upon a tender, slender-waisted form;
Upon a tender, slender-waisted figure,
وَبِمُقلةٍand with an eye خفَقَfluttered الفَؤادُthe heart وقَدand indeed رَنَتit gazed
وَبِمُقلةٍ خفَقَ الفَؤادُ وقَد رَنَت
وَكذاand likewise الجُنونُmadness يَكونُoccurs عَنfrom سَوداءِa dark eye (also black bile)
وَكذا الجُنونُ يَكونُ عَن سَوداءِ
and with an eye—when it gazed intently—the heart fluttered,
And with an eye whose gaze made the heart flutter.
and madness likewise comes from black bile.
And likewise, madness comes from a dark eye.
