وَافَىhe arrived بأَحْمَرَin red كَالشَّقِيقِlike the anemone وَقَدْand had غَدَاbecome
وَافَى بأَحْمَرَ كَالشَّقِيقِ وَقَدْ غَدَا
يَهْتَزُّhe sways فِيهِin it بِقَامَةٍwith a figure هَيْفَاءِslender-waisted
يَهْتَزُّ فِيهِ بِقَامَةٍ هَيْفَاءِ
He arrived in red, like an anemone, and was now
He came in red like a poppy, and dawn had appeared,
Swaying in it with a slender-waisted figure.
Swaying in it with a slender, bending form.
فَعَجِبْتُso I marveled مِنْهُat him وَقَدْand had غَدَاbecome فِيin حُلَّةٍa robe
فَعَجِبْتُ مِنْهُ وَقَدْ غَدَا فِي حُلَّةٍ
حَمُرَاءَred إذْsince مَاnot زَالَhe ceased to be فِيin سَوْدائِيmy heart’s dark core
حَمُرَاءَ إذْ مَا زَالَ فِي سَوْدائِي
So I marveled at him, now dressed in a robe
I was amazed at him as he appeared wearing
Of red, for he was still in my heart’s dark core.
A red garment, though he was still in my black clothes.
