    By the sanctity of these enchanting eyes,

    and by the beauty of this radiant cheek,

    if you joined me in the darkness, there would be no night

    for my heart, since that cheek would keep it in noonday heat.

    For God's sake, fear the guilt of killing me, O my slayer:

    for today is this world, and tomorrow the Hereafter.

    My heart is your Egypt—what ails it,

    that it has melted under your conquering ways?

    فَهِيَ لِذا في حُسْنِه حَائِرَهْ

    The beauty marks on that cheek come from my eye;

    so my eye is bewildered by that cheek's beauty.
