By the one who allowed you to kill me,

why have you forbidden union with me?

How, then, can I bear estrangement,

and how can I listen to reproach?

I am the one who yearns for you,

    while another enjoys his fill.

O noblest of people in my eyes,

my abasement for your sake has indeed grown sweet to me.

You have taken possession, O light of my eye,

of my heart, my mind, and all of me.

    O aloof and unjust one,

    be unveiled and show yourself.

    O fairest of all people,

in beauty of character and form,

    in every kind and sort

    of beauty and excellence.

    I see your qualities appear

as beauty, and so veil my reason.

And one like you does not desire

to forsake one like me in love.

    فَذَا رَبيعٌ مُوَلِّي

    As long as you love, remain united with me;

for this is a spring that is passing away.

A beard is enough for me and you,

bringing the sundering of my union.

    And after that, whenever

you see my face, turn away.
