بَدْرٌa full moon عَنِfrom الوَصْلِunion فِيin الهَوَىlove عَدَلاturned away
مَاno لِيَfor me عَنْهُaway from him إِنْwhether جَارَacted unjustly أَوْor عَدَلاacted justly مَذْهَبْescape
A full moon has turned away from union in love.
The full moon is equal to union in love
I have no escape from him, whether he is unjust or fair.
I have no other course, whether he is near or far
مُتَرَّكُTurk-like اللَّحْظِthe gaze لَفْظُهُhis speech خَنَثُlanguid softness
إِلَيْهِtoward him تَصْبُوyearns الحَشَاthe innermost heart وَتَنْبَعِثُand stirs
Turkish in gaze, his speech is soft and languid.
His words left unspoken are effeminate
My innermost heart yearns toward him and stirs.
The sorrows pour towards him and spring up
أَشْكُوI complain إِلَيْهِto him وَلَيسَand does not يَكْتَرِثُcare
دَعَاbade فُؤَادِيmy heart بِأَنْto يَذْوبَmelt قِلَىdisdain
I complain to him, but he does not care.
I complain to him but he does not care
He bade my heart melt from his disdain.
My heart called to melt away, roasted
المَوْتُdeath وَاللَّهby God مِنْthan مَقَالِيmy saying لا'no' أَقْرَبْnearer
لَمْdid not يَبْقَremain لِيfor me مُقْلَةٌan eye وَلاnor كَبِدُa liver
Death, by God, is nearer than my saying 'No.'
By God, death is closer to me than my words
No eye remains to me, nor a liver.
I have no more liver or kidneys left
وَالقَلْبُand the heart فِيهِover him أَوْدَىbrought ruin بِهِupon it الكَمَدُgrief
وَلَيْسَand does not يُلْفِيfind لِهَجْرِهِto his estrangement أَمَدُan end
And my heart—grief over him has brought it to ruin.
And my heart, the intense heat has melted them away
And it finds no end to his estrangement.
And he cannot endure being absent for long
لاdo not تَعْجَبُواmarvel إِنْif غَدَوْتُI became مُحْتَمِلاًforbearing
لَكِنَّbut قَلْبِيmy heart إِنْif كَانَhad عَنْهُaway from him سَلاceased loving أَعْجَبْmore astonishing
Do not marvel if I have become forbearing.
Do not be surprised if I have become forbearing
But my heart would be stranger still if it had ceased to love him.
But it is amazing if my heart remains serene without him
بِالحُسْنِwith beauty كُلّall العُقُولِthe minds قَدْindeed نَهَبَاhe plundered
وَالحُزْنُand sorrow كُلّall القُلُوبِthe hearts قَدْindeed وَهَبَاhe bestowed
With beauty he has plundered every mind.
Beauty has stolen all minds
And he has bestowed sorrow on every heart.
And sorrow has bestowed all hearts
شَمْسٌa sun وَلكِنَّنِيand yet I لَدَيْهِbeside him هَباdust
فَانْظُرْthen behold لِذَاكَat that القَوَامِfigure كَيْفَhow جَلاappeared
He is a sun, but beside him I am dust.
A sun, but to me he is haze
Then behold that figure, how it appears
So look at that slender figure, how majestic
غُصْناًa bough وَكَمْand how much بِالجَمَالِthrough beauty مِنْهُfrom him جَلاdispelled غَيْهَبْdeep darkness
As a bough—and how much darkness his beauty has dispelled!
A branch, though in beauty how many like him are rare
