    Your loftiness and eminence refuse

all but that in which your splendor shines.

By my life, you have indeed surpassed men,

and on the day of the race your reach outstripped theirs.

    O Ibn al-Mudabbir—generosity

is a downpour your sky pours forth.

Hope has grown great, and many a day

our hope in you has come true.

Yet a bounty eludes me, only as far away

as your letter or a meeting with you.

Whose aid, then, can be hoped for, if

your aid is not hoped for in misfortune?

And another's gift, if you devote

attention to it, is your gift.
