أَبَرَّ عَلى الأَلواءِ نائِلُكَ الغَمرُ

أَبَرَّ عَلى الأَلواءِ نائِلُكَ الغَمرُ

وَبِنتَ بِفَخرٍ ما يُشاكِلُهُ فَخرُ

وَبِنتَ بِفَخرٍ ما يُشاكِلُهُ فَخرُ

Your abundant bounty has outstripped adversity,

The clouds poured down upon your triumphs,

and you stand apart in glory that no glory can match.

And you built with pride that which no pride can parallel,

وَأَنتَ أَمينَ اللَهِ في المَوضِعِ الَّذي

وَأَنتَ أَمينَ اللَهِ في المَوضِعِ الَّذي

أَبى اللَهُ أَن يَسمو إِلى قَدرِهِ قَدرُ

أَبى اللَهُ أَن يَسمو إِلى قَدرِهِ قَدرُ

And you, God's trustee, occupy the station which

You are God's trustee in the position which

God allows no other rank to equal in stature.

God refused to elevate to its level any position,

تَحَسَّنَتِ الدُنيا بِعَدلِكَ فَاِغتَدَت

تَحَسَّنَتِ الدُنيا بِعَدلِكَ فَاِغتَدَت

وَآفاقُها بيضٌ وَأَكنافُها خُضرُ

وَآفاقُها بيضٌ وَأَكنافُها خُضرُ

The world grew beautiful through your justice, and dawned

The world was beautified by your justice, so it became verdant,

with its horizons white and its regions green.

And its horizons are white and its sides are green,

هَنيئاً لِأَهلِ الشامِ أَنَّكَ سائِرٌ

هَنيئاً لِأَهلِ الشامِ أَنَّكَ سائِرٌ

إِلَيهِم مَسيرَ القَطرِ يَتبَعُهُ القَطرُ

إِلَيهِم مَسيرَ القَطرِ يَتبَعُهُ القَطرُ

Joy to the people of al-Sham, for you are traveling

Congratulations to the people of Syria, for you are marching

to them as rain comes, rain following rain.

Towards them like rain pouring forth followed by rain,

تَفيضُ كَما فاضَ الغَمامُ عَلَيهِم

تَفيضُ كَما فاضَ الغَمامُ عَلَيهِم

وَتَطلُعُ فيهِم مِثلَما يَطلُعُ البَدرُ

وَتَطلُعُ فيهِم مِثلَما يَطلُعُ البَدرُ

You pour forth as the clouds have poured upon them,

You overflow upon them as the clouds overflowed,

and rise among them as the full moon rises.

And you rise among them as the full moon rises,

وَلَن يَعدَموا حُسناً إِذا كُنتَ فيهِمِ

وَلَن يَعدَموا حُسناً إِذا كُنتَ فيهِمِ

وَكانَ لَهُم جارَينِ جودُكَ وَالبَحرُ

وَكانَ لَهُم جارَينِ جودُكَ وَالبَحرُ

And they will not lack goodness when you are among them,

And they will not lack goodness while you are among them,

and your generosity and the sea are their two neighbors.

With your generosity and the sea as their neighbors,

مَضى الشَهرُ مَحموداً وَلَو قالَ مُخبِراً

مَضى الشَهرُ مَحموداً وَلَو قالَ مُخبِراً

لَأَثنى بِما أَولَيتَ أَيّامَهُ الشَهرُ

لَأَثنى بِما أَولَيتَ أَيّامَهُ الشَهرُ

The month passed, worthy of praise; had it told its tale,

The month has passed commended, and if a herald were to speak

the month would have praised what you bestowed on its days.

He would praise the days you made this month,

عُصِمتَ بِتَقوى اللَهِ وَالوَرَعِ الَّذي

عُصِمتَ بِتَقوى اللَهِ وَالوَرَعِ الَّذي

أَتَيتَ فَلا لَغوٌ لَدَيكَ وَلا هُجرُ

أَتَيتَ فَلا لَغوٌ لَدَيكَ وَلا هُجرُ

You were safeguarded by reverence for God and the piety that

You are protected by your piety and devotion with which

you practiced; no idle talk or foul speech is found with you.

You came, so neither nonsense nor estrangement are found in you,

وَقَدَّمتَ سَعياً صالِحاً لَكَ ذُخرُهُ

وَقَدَّمتَ سَعياً صالِحاً لَكَ ذُخرُهُ

وَكُلُّ الَّذي قَدَّمتَ مِن صالِحٍ ذُخرُ

وَكُلُّ الَّذي قَدَّمتَ مِن صالِحٍ ذُخرُ

And you sent ahead righteous effort, its reward stored for you;

You did good work ahead of you, for which the reward is stored,

and all the good you sent ahead is a stored treasure.

And everything good you put forth is stored away,

وَحالَ عَلَيكَ الحَولُ بِالفِطرِ مُقبِلاً

وَحالَ عَلَيكَ الحَولُ بِالفِطرِ مُقبِلاً

فَبِاليُمنِ وَالإيمانِ قابَلَكَ الفِطرُ

فَبِاليُمنِ وَالإيمانِ قابَلَكَ الفِطرُ

And the year came round to you, with Eid al-Fitr approaching,

And the new year comes to you observing the fast,

so Eid al-Fitr met you with good fortune and faith.

So with good fortune and faith this new year meets you,

لَعَمري لَقَد زُرتَ المُصَلّى بِجَحفَلٍ

لَعَمري لَقَد زُرتَ المُصَلّى بِجَحفَلٍ

يُرَفرِفُ في أَثناءِ راياتِهِ النَصرُ

يُرَفرِفُ في أَثناءِ راياتِهِ النَصرُ

By my life, you indeed visited the prayer ground with a mighty host,

By my life, you visited the praying place thronged

with victory fluttering in the folds of its banners.

With banners waving amidst its victory,

جِبالُ حَضيدٍ تَحتَها الناسُ في الوَغى

جِبالُ حَضيدٍ تَحتَها الناسُ في الوَغى

وَفيها الضِرابُ الهَبرُ وَالعَدَدُ الدَثرُ

وَفيها الضِرابُ الهَبرُ وَالعَدَدُ الدَثرُ

Mountains of [iron], with men beneath them in battle,

The mountains of Hadid, beneath which people were in turmoil

and within them are cleaving blows and vast numbers.

And which had much milling about and a numerous throng,

وَسِرتَ بِمُلكٍ قاهِرٍ وَخِلافَةٍ

وَسِرتَ بِمُلكٍ قاهِرٍ وَخِلافَةٍ

وَما بِكَ زَهوٌ بَينَ ذَينِ وَلا كِبرُ

وَما بِكَ زَهوٌ بَينَ ذَينِ وَلا كِبرُ

And you went forth with overpowering sovereignty and the caliphate,

You proceeded with conquering dominion and caliphate,

yet amid those two you have neither conceit nor arrogance.

And you have no vanity or arrogance between the two,

عَلَيكَ ثِيابُ المُصطَفى وَوَقارُهُ

عَلَيكَ ثِيابُ المُصطَفى وَوَقارُهُ

وَأَنتَ بِهِ أَولى إِذا حَصحَصَ الأَمرُ

وَأَنتَ بِهِ أَولى إِذا حَصحَصَ الأَمرُ

Upon you are the Chosen One's garments and his dignity,

Upon you are the clothes and dignity of the Chosen One,

and you have the greatest claim to him when the matter becomes clear:

And you are most deserving of them when matters are probed,

عِمامَتُهُ وَسَيفُهُ وَرِداؤُهُ

عِمامَتُهُ وَسَيفُهُ وَرِداؤُهُ

وَسيماهُ وَالهَديُ المُشاكِلُ وَالنَجرُ

وَسيماهُ وَالهَديُ المُشاكِلُ وَالنَجرُ

His turban, his sword, and his cloak,

His turban, his sword, his cloak,

and his mien, matching conduct, and lineage.

His noble traits, his guidance, and his pulpit,

وَلَمّا صَعَدتَ المِنبَرَ اِهتَزَّ وَاِكتَسى

وَلَمّا صَعَدتَ المِنبَرَ اِهتَزَّ وَاِكتَسى

ضِياءً وَإِشراقاً كَما سَطَعَ الفَجرُ

ضِياءً وَإِشراقاً كَما سَطَعَ الفَجرُ

And when you ascended the pulpit, it quivered and clothed itself

And when you ascended the pulpit it shook and was wrapped

in light and radiance, as the dawn shone forth.

In splendor and radiance like the rising dawn,

فَقُمتَ مَقاماً يَعلَمُ اللَهُ أَنَّهُ

فَقُمتَ مَقاماً يَعلَمُ اللَهُ أَنَّهُ

مَقامُ إِمامٍ تَركُ طاعَتِهِ كُفرُ

مَقامُ إِمامٍ تَركُ طاعَتِهِ كُفرُ

So you occupied a station that God knows to be

You took a position that God knows is the position

the station of an imam: to abandon obedience to him is unbelief.

Of an imam, whose disobedience is unbelief,

وَذَكَّرتَنا حَتّى أَلَنتَ قُلوبَنا

وَذَكَّرتَنا حَتّى أَلَنتَ قُلوبَنا

بِمَوعِظَةٍ فَصلٍ يَلينُ لَها الصَخرُ

بِمَوعِظَةٍ فَصلٍ يَلينُ لَها الصَخرُ

And you exhorted us until you softened our hearts

And you reminded us until you softened our hearts

with a decisive admonition before which rock grows soft.

With eloquent preaching that softens even rock,

بَهَرتَ عُقولَ السامِعينَ بِخُطبَةٍ

بَهَرتَ عُقولَ السامِعينَ بِخُطبَةٍ

هِيَ الزَهَرُ المَبثوثُ وَاللُؤلُؤُ النَثرُ

هِيَ الزَهَرُ المَبثوثُ وَاللُؤلُؤُ النَثرُ

You dazzled the listeners' minds with a sermon:

You dazzled the minds of the listeners with a sermon

it is scattered blossoms and strewn pearls.

That is scattered blossoms and strewn pearls,

فَما تَرَكَ المَنصورُ نَصرَكَ عِندَها

فَما تَرَكَ المَنصورُ نَصرَكَ عِندَها

وَلا خانَكَ السَجادُ فيها وَلا الحَبرُ

وَلا خانَكَ السَجادُ فيها وَلا الحَبرُ

So al-Mansur did not forsake supporting you on that occasion,

So al-Mansur did not neglect aiding you through it

nor did al-Sajjad betray you in it, nor al-Habr.

Nor did al-Sajjad betray you in it, nor the virtuous scholar,

جُزيتَ جَزاءَ المُحسِنينَ عَنِ الهُدى

جُزيتَ جَزاءَ المُحسِنينَ عَنِ الهُدى

وَتَمَّت لَكَ النُعمى وَطالَ بِكَ العُمرُ

وَتَمَّت لَكَ النُعمى وَطالَ بِكَ العُمرُ

May you receive the reward of the virtuous for your guidance,

You were rewarded with the reward of the beneficent

and may blessing be complete for you and your life be long.

For guidance, and blessings and long life were completed for you,

إِرادَتُنا أَن تُكمِلَ العَيشَ سالِماً

إِرادَتُنا أَن تُكمِلَ العَيشَ سالِماً

وَتَبقى عَلى الأَيّامِ ما بَقِيَ الدَهرُ

وَتَبقى عَلى الأَيّامِ ما بَقِيَ الدَهرُ

Our wish is that you live out your life unharmed,

Our desire is for you to complete life in safety

and endure through the days as long as time endures.

And remain for days as long as time remains,

عَلى اللَهِ إِتمامُ المُنى فيكَ كُلِّها

عَلى اللَهِ إِتمامُ المُنى فيكَ كُلِّها

لَنا وَعَلَينا الحَمدُ لِلَّهِ وَالشُكرُ

لَنا وَعَلَينا الحَمدُ لِلَّهِ وَالشُكرُ

It rests with God to fulfill all the hopes concerning you

May God complete for you every wish,

for us; and ours is the duty of praise and thanks to God.

For us and for us is praise to God and gratitude.
