You two, meet the caravan at their ruined dwellings, and halt,
Welcome the travelers amid their ruins and stand still
though their surviving traces have worn away with age and vanished.
Even if the elegance of its remnants faded and disappeared

The dwellings will not let me refuse grief; whenever
The dwellings refuse that sorrows refuse, so whenever
I recover from it through forgetfulness, they break me anew with longing.
I drew solace from it, it revived my fatigue

People look to my misfortunes while their peaks
their howdahs have crossed the hills of the valley bend from Sharafā.
Were terrified by the precipices of terror

Within the curtained chambers are full moons that seldom rise
In the tents, there are tents that rarely emerged
without the full moon's light dying away or being eclipsed.
Except when the light of the full moon eclipsed or was veiled

Divided between well-formed hips
Distributed between moist, bent-over hindquarters
that summon desire, and waists refined to slenderness.
That arouse desire, and backs that were inundated with waves

I used to complain of the persistence of her love being new
now, in middle age, I hope she will treat me fairly.
But now I hope for its fairness, by halves

I have a heart that if I restrain its folly
rebels, and tears that flow whenever I wipe them back.
It refuses, and tears that if I restrain them, it suffices

By God, our days - how good they were
if only time had halted instead of passing away!
If only time would stop going and stand still

Do not lie, for the world does not return
the worldly pleasures that are lost and all that has passed.
What is past of the world’s pleasures and went by

Our days would not have been described

whose wont wins him both the withheld and the freely granted.
A hand that gives them the exclusive and the best

Lord of resolves, if the least of them became angry
the hilltops of Radwa, they would surely quake.
The sides of the plateau would tremble from its consent

Asking Suleiman when his ignorance stood still for a while
for a time, and the evil of his deeds overtook him.
Until the hated consequence of what he had done caught up to him

Since the time they rebelled with aggression and he abandoned them
by their excess as targets for the spearpoints.
The edges of the spearheads missed their heads as prey

they would have summoned a crashing storm-cloud of might.
To solicit relief from the severity of the raging dusty wind

Bared its ugly fangs, intense

through his justice and bounty a fresh, ungrazed meadow.
It became, with his justice and light, a meadow, delighted

You brandished before the Muslims a sword of calamity
that cured their breasts of rancor and brought healing.
That ripped out the claws of its afflictions and healed

If not for your defense, the kingdom would have been seized
the people divided, and all affairs at odds.
The nation divided, and the matter disputed

Nothing but your sword could cure those complaints

Where gifts are, at the abode, and plenty overflowed

Your spacious courtyard, when they alighted there, was never
Your vast tent was not narrow when they descended
a cramped lodging, nor was your bounty scant.
Nor was the hospitality meager or inadequate

When men exchange accounts of noble deeds,
When men mention a noble deed
you overwhelm them in nobility or surpass them in honor.
They are immersed in joy or your ascension ennobles them
أَمسىhas become بِكَthrough you المُصرَمُthe penniless المَحرومُthe deprived مُغتَبِطاًglad

Through you, the destitute and deprived have become glad,
Through you, the dispossessed, deprived one is elated
aided against time, and the wronged have gained redress.
Avenging the days and the oppressed

Through your bounty, the days have drawn back,
Through your length, the days turned away
from my courtyard, and time's reversals have turned away.
From my field, and the turns of fate receded
حَسبيenough for me بِجودِكَthrough your generosity فَذّاًalone أَستَعينُI seek help بِهِthrough it

Your generosity alone suffices me; I draw on it
It suffices me, your generosity, pride with which I seek aid
against calamities when they crowd together—and it is enough.
Against afflictions, whenever they become tangled, and it is enough
