أَينَ تِلكَ الأَيمانُ يا كَذّابُ

أَينَ تِلكَ الأَيمانُ يا كَذّابُ

يَومَ صالَحتَني بِأَن لا عِتابُ

يَومَ صالَحتَني بِأَن لا عِتابُ

Where are those oaths, you liar,

Where are those promises, O liar

from the day you made peace with me, agreeing there would be no reproach?

When you reconciled with me that there would be no reproach

كانَ تَصديقُها وَلَم يَكُ إِلّا

كانَ تَصديقُها وَلَم يَكُ إِلّا

مُذ ثَلاثٍ أَن جاءَ هَذا الكِتابُ

مُذ ثَلاثٍ أَن جاءَ هَذا الكِتابُ

Their fulfillment—though it had been only

I believed them and it was nothing but

three days—was the arrival of this letter.

Since three days when this letter came

قُلتُ لَمّا حَكى كِتابُكَ أَنّي

قُلتُ لَمّا حَكى كِتابُكَ أَنّي

قَد تَغَيَّرتُ ما لِهَذا جَوابُ

قَد تَغَيَّرتُ ما لِهَذا جَوابُ

I said, when your letter reported that I

had changed, 'There is no answer to this.'

رَبِّ إِنّي مِنَ الحَبيبِ بَعيدٌ

رَبِّ إِنّي مِنَ الحَبيبِ بَعيدٌ

وَبَعيدٌ تَدنو بِهِ الأَسبابُ

وَبَعيدٌ تَدنو بِهِ الأَسبابُ

My Lord, I am far from my beloved,

My Lord, I am far from the beloved

yet even one far away can be drawn near by bonds.

And the reasons to get close are far
