Unjust in judgment—had he wished, he would have been fair.

He took sleep for himself and gave me sleeplessness.

He is absent from what I endure through the night in love,

And even were he present, he would be distant in sympathy.

And with my life I would ransom—though hopes are folly—

A lord who turns away from me and shuns me.

He has changed from some of what I knew of him,

Yet I see I have not changed from what he knew of me.

How can our love remain hidden, after

A talebearer rose and sat spreading word of our love?

I cannot forget my night with him, when

A miser's two eyes fulfilled what he had promised.

    Between us, hand clasped hand,

And we embraced, so cheek met cheek.

And we complained to each other of love's anguish,

That filled our entrails with blazing fire.

O you who cross the inner reaches of the desert,

    Seeking bounty from stony-hearted men,

Leave people aside; do not be deceived by them,

And rely on the ocean of Imam al-Mu'tamid.

A king—it is enough for you to know that he

Found the world and gave away what he found.

Were rain the source of what flows from

His two palms as gifts, the rain would run dry.

A lofty resolve we recognize in Ja'far,

And virtues in him too many to count.

Our days have shone bright under his reign,

And our new nights have grown splendid with beauty.
