The one I had loved stubbornly persisted in turning away.

And afterward the birds of good fortune flew.

And God decreed that I should melt and waste away,

and decay lies behind everything new.

And love in youth is near to sound judgment,

and what is near is not like what is far.

Often I was a lover of young women,

madly enamored of every fair-skinned, supple woman.

How often I mingled pure wine with her saliva,

and both of us were slain by harp and lute.

And the wine had stirred in us both

the pride of Isa, son of Khalid, son of al-Walid:

a horseman who strikes horsemen with the sword,

when mountains of iron shield themselves.
